In a world of excess, sometimes there is just not enough.
There’s too much food, too much anger, too much violence, too much deception, too many divorces, too many homeless people and too many government. But on the other hand, there isn’t enough money, not enough jobs, not enough food, not enough love and not enough good in the world.
That’s right, you heard me. Squat racks have got to be one of the most endangered species on the planet. You walk into our multi-million dollar gym at work and what do you see? Tons of ellipticals, treadmills, exercise machines, dumbbells… and one squat rack. And it isn’t even what I consider a squat rack… it’s a Smith Machine. In my opinion, it is the last resort of exercise equipment. A resort I almost had to give into today.
The gym I go to is a local recreation center. I know they aren’t making tons of money but they are taking plenty each year from my wife and I. On top of it, all of the other people who are there all of the time and they have to make a pretty penny. Yet instead of fixing up the existing weight room and adding more equipment they turn one of the racquetball courts into a crossfit room. Really? I understand that crossfit is all the craze now, but can’t you toss a bone to those of us who choose to go with what has worked for years and years?
Unfortunately I headed to the gym about 5 minutes too late. When I got there one of the two squat racks was well into being used while the other had just found a new master. He hadn’t started yet and I almost wanted to beg him to let me do my Stronglifts program quickly… but I didn’t. Instead, I did the other parts of the program along with my cable machine core workouts and – since there still was no freedom of the racks – I went up and ran.
I finished my run and cooled down a little before heading back down to the weight room. When I got there, both racks were still in use. One by a new guy and the second by the same guy.
Now first of all, I know not everyone pounds out reps as fast as I do at the gym. Some people like to take their time between sets, but give me a break. I did 2/3rds of my Stronglifts program, my core exercises and ran almost 2.5 miles and you are STILL squatting? Well, I assume you are squatting since all I see every time I walk in is you sitting and staring at the floor.
Anyway, as I stared at the Smith Machine I sighed, knowing that I was just going to have to either give in and do it or head out the door and skip it. I honestly considered skipping it more than using that stupid machine, but suddenly rack number one became free. I almost flittered over to it with such joy. Pounded out my squats and headed on home.
In this crazy world where too much is never enough, sometimes you just don’t quite have what you need, though I suppose a little patience pays off.
Or having the nerve to just sit and stare at the floor for an hour.
